Dóchas expresses condolences on death of Dr Garret FitzGerald
Thursday, 19 May 2011
Dóchas, the umbrella group of Irish Development NGOs, extends condolences to the family and friends of former Taoiseach and Fine Gael Leader Garret Fitzgerald who died this morning.
Dr. Garret FitzGerald was the first Taoiseach to see the strategic importance to Ireland of having a dedicated development cooperation programme.
In June last year, Dr.FitzGerald lent a helpful hand to over 60 anti-poverty organisations by launching the “Act Now on 2015” campaign, which calls on Government to deliver on its promise to reach the UN target of spending 0.7% of national income on overseas aid by 2015.
Dóchas Director Hans Zomer said:
“He was a great man, a great advocate for an active Irish role in global cooperation, and the first Taoiseach to appoint a Minister of State for Overseas Aid. Thanks to his leadership, Ireland has built up a global reputation as a country that seeks cooperation, not isolation.”
"We would like to pass on our sincere sympathies to all of Dr. FitzGerald’s family and friends at this difficult time," continued Zomer.
